General

What is Story Time Chess?

Story Time Chess is an education company that teaches children as young as 3 through storytelling, turning each chess piece into a character with a memorable backstory.

What makes your program different from traditional chess lessons?

Our classes are taught by trained Story Time Chess coaches who specialize in making chess fun and accessible for children of all skill levels.

What ages do you teach?

We specialize in ages 3-8, but we've taught hundreds of curious toddlers ready to explore chesseven if they've never seen a board before.

What is your method for teaching chess?

Each piece becomes a character with a purpose, making learning fun, memorable, and emotionally engaging. We introduce one piece at a time, gradually increasing complexity. Beyond chess, our lessons build focus, perseverance, sportsmanship, and critical thinking.

What does a typical class look like?

Each session begins with a story or theme that introduces a new chess concept, followed by practice games and skill-building activities. Classes are structured, interactive, and always kid-friendly.

How does the chess curriculum progress?

Students begin with the foundational “story” lessons (each piece has a character!) and gradually learn how pieces move, how to capture, and how to develop strategies. Progress builds week by week.

Will my child actually learn chess, or is it just for fun?

Both! Our curriculum is designed so children genuinely learn chess — how to play, how to think ahead, and how to compete — while having a great time doing it. Many students go on to play in tournaments.

Scheduling & Calendar

When do classes meet?

Classes typically meet once a week after school, on a day agreed upon with your school coordinator. Schedules vary by location and are confirmed before the session begins.

How long is each class session?

Sessions are 45–60 minutes, depending on the school’s schedule and available time slot.

How many weeks does the program run?

Program length varies by school and season, but most sessions run 8–12 weeks. The full schedule will be shared at enrollment.

Where can I find the class calendar?

Your enrollment confirmation email will include the class schedule. You can also log in to your account on our website to view upcoming dates.

Absences & Makeups

What happens if my child misses a class?

We understand that things come up! While we don’t offer formal makeup sessions, coaches recap key concepts at the start of each class so students can catch up quickly.

What if class is cancelled due to a school holiday?

Story Time Chess follows the school calendar. If school is closed, class is cancelled. We do our best to communicate any schedule changes in advance.

Are there any refunds for missed classes?

We do not offer refunds or credits for individual missed classes. If Story Time Chess cancels a session, that class will either be rescheduled or prorated in your billing.

Pickup & Safety

Where do students go after class?

Students are typically held in the classroom or a designated area until they are picked up. Your school coordinator will share the specific location for your school.

What is the pick-up procedure?

Pick-up procedures vary by school. Please follow your school’s standard after-school pick-up policy. Your coach will not release a child to anyone not listed as an authorized contact.

What if I’m running late to pick up my child?

Please notify the school office immediately if you are running late. Our coaches will stay with students until they are safely picked up, but repeated late pickups may affect your enrollment.

What if someone other than the parent is picking up?

Anyone picking up your child must be listed as an authorized pick-up contact in your enrollment profile. Please keep this information current and notify the school in advance of any changes.

Billing & Enrollment

How do I enroll my child?

You can enroll online through the Story Time Chess website. Select your school, choose the session, and complete the registration and payment steps. You’ll receive a confirmation email once your spot is secured.

What payment methods are accepted?

We accept all major credit and debit cards through our secure online enrollment portal. Some schools may also accept payment through the school’s activity fund or PTA.

Is financial assistance available?

We believe every child deserves access to chess education. Please contact us directly to ask about scholarship opportunities or reduced-rate enrollment options at your school.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Cancellations made before the first class are eligible for a full refund. After the session begins, refunds are prorated based on remaining classes. Please contact us to request a cancellation.

Contact & Support

Who do I contact with questions about my enrollment?

For enrollment questions, contact Story Time Chess directly through our website or email support. For school-specific questions (schedule, location, pickup), reach out to your school’s program coordinator.

How do I reach my child’s chess coach?

The best way to connect with your child’s coach is through the school coordinator, who can pass along messages or arrange a brief check-in before or after class.

I have a concern about my child’s experience. Who should I talk to?

We take parent feedback seriously. Please contact us through storytimechess.com and a member of our team will follow up with you promptly. For urgent matters, call the school office directly.
